NORTH COLLINS, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating thecircumstances of a young woman’s death in a house on Sherman Avenuein the Village of North Collins, the second death under suspiciouscircumstances at that address.

Authorities were called to a first floor apartment of the houseon Sherman Avenue, Wednesday afternoon and found the body of23-year-old Laura Cummings on the bathroom floor.

The medical examiner has not determined the cause of death,so right now the case is being called suspicious.

“And as of this point in time, appeared to be suspicious innature,” said Erie County Sheriff Investigator Captain RonKenyon.

Captain Kenyon says a family member found Laura Cummings body, but instead of calling 911, the woman’s mother called a relativewho made the call.

While investigators are stopping short of calling the death ahomicide, detectives seem to be leaning in that direction, suggesting someone caused Cummings’ death.

Kenyon said, “Whoever did this certainly knows the victim.”

For Laura Cumming’s family, this is the second brush withtragedy. Six years ago a 67-year-old man was found murdered in anupstairs apartment.

The victim was Jose Fontanes and two men were eventuallyconvicted for his murder.

Captain Ron Kenyon says, the two cases were just acoincidence as he investigated the previous case back then as aSheriff’s lieutenant.

But with police still saturating the neighborhood, it’s a prettygood bet this latest case will turn out to be a homicide, too.

It seems almost incomprehensible for a little quiet place likeNorth Collins, but a Sheriff’s spokesperson told me, a deputysheriff Williams Dills was also killed there, next door to thehouse on Collins, back in 1977.
