Zoo needs $2M to keep polar bears

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Kali and Luna have stolen hearts and enthralled visitors at the Buffalo Zoo since they arrived. They are two of Buffalo’s favorite additions. However, the zoo is still more than $2 million away from its fundraising goal and without that money, they can’t build a new exhibit for the polar bears.

The Buffalo Zoo says there is a chance the polar bears may never see a Buffalo winter. The Buffalo Zoo might have to say goodbye to its polar bears once again. In 2012, Nanuk and Anana had to leave because the Buffalo Zoo needed to do renovations.

Since then, the zoo brought in new polar bears Luna and Kali and the have captured the hearts of many throughout western New York.  It cost $18 million to build the new polar bear exhibit. The zoo still needs to raise more than $2 million for it. Zoo officials say if they can’t raise that money by the fall, both bears will have to be shipped elsewhere.

Buffalo Zoo President Donna Fernandes said,”We’re also hoping individuals who are helping so far will continue to give.”

Zoo officials say they hope to put in a bid for the state-of-the-art polar bear exhibit by Labor Day.
