GAINSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) – Caitlyn Kish’s baby wasn’t going to wait to be born, even with a polar vortex delivering western New York’s the worst blizzard in 20 years.
The Daily News of Batavia reports Kish’s mother was driving Kish from her home in the rural Cattaraugus County town of Freedom to a hospital in neighboring Wyoming County after the younger woman’s water broke before dawn Tuesday when conditions outside were arctic.
Cynthia May only drove a few miles before Caitlyn began giving birth in the back seat. May pulled to the side of the road in Gainsville and called 911.
She was connected to an emergency dispatcher for nearby Livingston County who talked them through the birth. Kish’s husband arrived on the scene soon after and an ambulance took mother and baby to the hospital. Both are doing fine.
