Man holds police at bay at Super 8

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) – Amherst Police rushed to the Super 8 on Transit Road near Main Street on Friday on a report of a distraught man who claimed he had a gun.

The man, who police say is in his 50s, refused to come outside and held officers at bay for several hours.

Amherst Police Asst. Chief Charles Cohen said, “Once the scene was secure, we had our hostage negotiators come out and talk with him over the phone. After several hours of negotiations he came out without incident.”

Authorities say the man was distraught over family problems. He was taken to ECMC for a mental evaluation.
