AMHERST, NY (WIVB) – Suspicions are swirling around an apartment complex on Allenhurt Road, in Amherst. The Town of Amherst Police Department is investigating the suspicious death of a three-year-old girl. Police responded to the Allenhurst Road residence Saturday morning.
Amherst Police say they found the three-year-old dead inside an apartment. “So we started to be nosey neighbors like anyone else and kept staring out the window and started questioning in our own minds what in the hell is going on across the street,” said neighbor Marlow Sparks.
Sparks and Melinna Queener live in the apartment complex on Allenhurst. Both are mothers to young children. They say as police investigated all day Saturday, it was eerily calm. “It was quiet, just dead silence, there was no sign of panic somebody died,” said Queener.
The two women and a number of other neighbors say they didn’t know the family of the child, nor did they see them out and about. A couple people say there was more than one child that lived in the home, possibly a newborn.
Queener moved to the neighborhood a month ago and the incident has her on edge. “To know that a child is dead right here and me moving a month ago and something like this happened. Did I move to the right place? That’s kind of what I’m worried about now.”
Police aren’t releasing any information, only saying the death is suspicious. “Regardless, it’s sad any day a child is dead and they need to know what happened so that justice can be brought about or anything,” said Sparks.
