Sabres help launch reading program

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Local librarians hope the joy of reading will spread across Western New York this winter.

Buffalo Sabres center Cody Hodgson and mascot Sabretooth are helping librarians reach their goal. On Friday, they read to students at Buffalo’s Bennett Park Montessori School.

The fun event kicks off the Wonderful World of Reading program for the winter. Kids, teens and adults are encouraged to read as much as they can then head to the Buffalo and Erie County Library website to do a brief book report. And it could really pay off!

Library director Mary Jean Jakubowski said, “The kids can win all kinds of things from warm and fuzzy sleeping bags full of goodies, a cool lantern we’re giving away, just all kinds of things. One adult will win a Kindle Fire e-reader. We’re very excited about that.”

This is the program’s third year. The library has more than 2.5 million books to choose from for free, including e-books. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
