Volunteers team up for service project

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A popular way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy is by giving back to the community, and helping others. Many organizations across the country are hosting days of services Monday.

Volunteers from Buffalo Americorps and the Belle Center teamed up with Habitat for Humanity. They have been at a house on Wilkes Avenue since about 9 a.m. clearing out the old owner’s things and getting it ready for a new family. Volunteers say it’s an honor to carry on Dr. King’s legacy.

The Belle Center’s Callie Johnson said, “Martin Luther King, one of his quotes was “Life’s most persistant and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing to serve others?’”

Johnson said, “Service is a lifestyle, so it’s an honor to be serving on a special day, like a National Day of Service and joining thousands of others around the nation to serve, especially here in our local community, in Buffalo.”
