WNYer shot by officer in NM is charged

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) – A Hamburg man faces felony charges in northern New Mexico where he was shot by a police officer following a pursuit on Interstate 25.

A criminal complaint charges 72-year-old Albert J. Urban with two counts of aggravated assault upon a peace officer and one count of aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer.

The complaint filed in San Miguel County Magistrate Court says Urban told New Mexico State Police that he believed he was in Buffalo, N.Y., not Las Vegas, N.M.

Motorists reported a van driving the wrong way on I-25 on Saturday night, and police eventually forced it to stop.

Police say the shooting occurred when the van then struck an officer’s vehicle as he walked toward the van.
