BARKER, N.Y. (WIVB) – A star athlete in East Aurora is also scoring big in the classroom. East Aurora’s Karleigh Volk is the type of student who always strives to do the best she can at all that she does each and every day.
While she admits it is not easy, Karleigh reaches a level of excellence on the field and in the classroom. That’s why she is this month’s scholar athlete. Volk, East Aurora’s field hockey and softball captain, has played sports her whole life.
Volk said, “It’s just my passion. I love playing. I can’t get enough of it.”
Field Hockey Coach Ashley Daigler said, “She is very motivating to the rest of the team. She gets girls to work hard. She really knows how to get the girls to work hard in order to get them to play to their best potential.”
East Aurora Head Softball Coach Dan Edholm said, “She is a power hitter, she is in the middle of our order. She plays a pretty solid first base for us.”
Academics are her priority. Volk said, “I have been on the honor roll every quarter every year.”
She added, “At the end of my high school career, I should have nine AP classes under my belt.”
Math and Science Teacher Marybeth Richey said, “Karleigh just always works hard, so if something doesn’t come easily, she just works harder to get it.”
Volk said, “I definitely want to get into a good college and I am looking to a field in dentistry, oral surgery.”
Richey said, “I think she has the potential to do whatever she wants to do, because she is so capable and so willing to put in the effort to learn.”
Karleigh is also heavily involved in volunteer work.
