Mobile banking leads to 170 layoffs

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – In its first year, more than 140,000 people downloaded First Niagara’s mobile app, and around 40 percent of the bank’s one million or so customers use online banking.

Because of that, the bank announced Wednesday that they will be restructuring branch employee positions. More than 200 workers have been promoted to positions that the bank says will “broaden their responsibilities and grow their careers.”

These newly defined positions have eliminated the need for 170 administrative workers across the company’s four-state footprint. The affected employees may be able to apply for other jobs within the bank. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
