With Mike Pettine bolting Buffalo to take over as the Browns’ head coach, the Bills now find themselves searching for a new defensive coordinator.
Earlier in the week, the team revealed it had a back-up plan, in case Pettine got the job. Now, they will need to put that plan into action.
The Bills will consider both in-house candidates, as well as options from outside the organization. One of the options on the current staff would be defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson, who has prior experience as a defensive coordinator in the NFL. Linebackers coach Jim O’Neil could be an option as well, but multiple reports have Pettine targeting O’Neil as his potential coordinator in Cleveland – although, Pettine would not comment on that today.
O’Neil, defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, and assistant DB coach Samson Brown all came over from the Jets to the Bills with Pettine last year, making them prime candidates to possibly follow him again to Cleveland.
