A former town clerk in Allegany County was arrested Thursday and charged with stealing nearly $4,000.

State Police and the Allegany County District Attorney’s Office conducted a joint investigation after an audit by the New York State Comptroller discovered the missing funds in the Town of Almond. On Thursday, 64-year-old Maureen Haynes, the former town clerk, was arrested and charged with third degree grand larceny and first degree falsifying business records.

Investigators say Haynes was town clerk when the money went missing. She’s due back in court February 10. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
