Driver allegedly drunk, on phone before crash

Tom Muscarella is Chairman of the 2009 Taste of Buffalo. We caught up with him tending to any one of a thousand details he will tackle during this long weekend. Believe it or not, his day job is with the Erie County Health Department as Senior Public Health Sanitarian. Seems like the right man for this mission!

A driver whose vehicle went off the road on Thursday and flipped multiple times was arrested for aggravated DWI, and deputies say he was using his cell phone at the time of the crash.

The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office was called to Saltvale Road in the Town of Middlebury for a one-vehicle accident. Deputies say they found 28-year-old Matthew Cerefin was driving drunk and using his cell phone when he went off the road and totaled his car.

Cerefin was taken to the Wyoming County Community Hospital Emergency Department for treatment, and once released he was arrested for aggravated DWI for having a BAC .18 percent or higher, DWI, failure to keep right, and driving while using a mobile phone.

He is due back in court at a later date. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
