Snowmobiler found dead after search

A 70-year-old man was found dead alongside his snowmobile early Friday morning in Wyoming County.

Deputies from Erie County and Wyoming County began searching for Wesley Kless of Marilla after he failed to return home. Kless had left his home around 11 a.m. on Thursday and a family member called authorities when he never returned.

The search began around 3:30 a.m. on Friday. A ping of Kless’s mobile phone led first responders to the area of Rt. 20A and Dutch Hollow Road in the Town of Sheldon. Around three hours later, authorities found his body around .25 miles north of Centerline Road and around .25 miles east of Dutch Hollow Road.

Investigators say Kless had been driving down a marked snowmobile trail when he went off of it, continuing northbound along a natural gas line path. About .10 miles off the trail, Kless hit a six-foot wide and four-foot deep drainage ditch. He was thrown 12 feet forward and his sled came to a stop beside him.

Kless was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted to determine his exact cause of death. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
