WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) – Victims of domestic violence have a new place to go to help them safely escape abuse. The Family Justice Center is opening a new satellite office in Williamsville on Monday.
“Nobody deserves to be in an abusive relationship. We stress to people this is not your fault” said Mary Travers Murphy, the Executive Director of the Family Justice Center. “Our message is we can help you get out and we can help you heal. We have everything you need in one place to make that happen”.
The center can help people with everything from filing charges and to getting an order of protection, Murphy said the North Forest Road location was created because pastors in the area saw a need for it.
“They’re all saying the same thing; we are seeing this among our congregation members. They’re coming to us and expressing the fact they’re in these kinds of relationships” said Murphy.
As a result the community pulled together and worked on this project. The office owned by North Presbyterian Church leased the space to the Family Justice Center for $1 a year. Also every room in the home was adopted by a church, community group or individual. Each room was renovated.
“It was there responsibility to purchase every piece of furniture, rip the wall paper off, repaint…get the carpeting. Every room redone top to bottom” said Murphy.
Once the office opens people are welcome to walk in anytime from 8:30 to 12:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
