BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The two worst teams in the NHL squared off tonight in Buffalo, with the Oilers squeaking out an ugly 3-2 victory.
Penalties dominated the game, with the two teams combining for 13 in all. Each team scored a short-handed goal, the Sabres scored once on the power play.
Edmonton got on the board, just 32 seconds into the game, when Jeff Petry scored on a back-hand that beat Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth. Buffalo tied the game on Steve Ott’s power play strike, then took the lead when Drew Stafford scored short-handed.
Justin Schultz tied it at two apiece in the second, before Matt Hendricks scored the game-winner, short-handed, in the third.
Buffalo had a goal waved off mid-way through the third period, when a ref blew his whistle before the puck crossed the line. Replays upheld the call.
Edmonton goalie Ilya Bryzgalov had 42 saves in the win.
The Sabres host Pittsburgh Wednesday night at 7pm.
