Elizabeth Wendel, a senior at Ellicottville High School, is News 4’s female scholar athlete for January.

The three-sport standout athlete plays soccer, basketball and softball and carries over her work ethic into the classroom, where she is an A student and takes several college courses.

Math and physics teacher Blair Wood said, “I’d say she is in the top five percent of students that I had in 23 years of teaching. She is really, really up there intellectually.”

Time management has been key in Elizabeth’s high school career, which has also involved music.

“It’s definitely something that gets me away from all the hustle and bustle of school and soccer and basketball. It just takes away from all the stress, really,” she said.

Despite taking on all of these challenges in stride, Elizabeth is always trying to get to the next level and be even better at all she does.

“To see what I am capable of, to see what I can do and how far I can get,” she said. “I definitely want to go into a high paying field, whether it’s engineering or the medical field, I haven’t decided just yet.”
