Firefighters drive by home, spot smoke

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Buffalo Firefighters battled a huge fire into the early-morning hours on Best Street.

Firefighters happened to be driving by when they saw smoke coming from home. Within minutes, flames had spread from the first to second floor.

“We always have issues in this kind of weather with the cold,” said Buffalo Fire Department Chief Jim LaMacchia. “We managed to keep from the house next door we had a little problem with that but we managed to keep away from that.”

Firefighters say it seems nobody lived at the home. The owner may be from out of town. No one was injured. Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
