BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Local health officials want women in western New York to wear red Friday, to help fight heart disease.

Erie County Health Commission Dr. Gail Burstein has proclaimed Friday “Wear Red Day.” This is part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Movement.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. It kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.

The American Heart Association has also issued its first guidelines for preventing strokes in women. Like heart attacks, the symptoms in women are different than they are in men. The new guidelines focus on birth control, pregnancy, depression and other risk factors.

Strokes are the third leading cause of death among women.
