Sabres quiet as trade freeze begins

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The NHL trade freeze is now in full effect, with barely a peep around the league leading up to today’s 3pm deadline.

The Sabres made three minor transactions, sending Phil Varone and Chad Ruhwedel down to Rochester and placing Linus Omark on waivers. In terms of trades, we will have to wait until everyone returns from the Olympics.

Last night, Sabres General Manager Tim Murray said he never viewed today’s 3pm trade freeze as anything to get excited about.

“Just the nature of the game… if we don’t trade anybody, we pay them through the Olympic break, then you can make a deal after it,” Murray said last night in Ottawa. “The economics of the game and everything else, the possibility of injuries at the Olympics for those players. I never expected anything to get done quickly.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
