Group aims to keep pedestrians safe in winter

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – When sidewalks are packed with snow and impassible it puts pedestrians in danger forcing them to walk on busy streets.

As a result, GO Bike Buffalo partnered with Grow 716 to create a sidewalk snow removal campaign.

If people see a snow clogged sidewalks in front of a Buffalo business they’re encouraged to report it. They can do that by sending an email to GO Bike Buffalo and they’ll post it on the social networking blog site, Tumblr.

People can also participate by texting the words “GO BIKE” to 877877. It will start a text conversation and an individual can say whether a sidewalk is clear or not. They can also upload a picture of it.

The information about the business, their address and the date the sidewalk wasn’t shoveled is then compiled into a report. The information will be sent to the Buffalo Common Council and Public Works Department in an effort to improve snow removal in the future.

“In the Buffalo code there’s plenty of language depicting that people need to shovel their sidewalks and if they don’t they can be given a fine. The the real problem right now is enforcement” said Tivona Renoni, the Community Outreach Coordinator for GO Bike Buffalo.
