Middle schoolers send love to heroes

Valentine’s Day is Friday and middle school students in Cheektowaga put together a special care package for the troops.

The project is called “Valentines for Vets.” Fifth grade boys and girls made hundreds of cards, some of which will go to local veterans while others will be sent to Afghanistan. The cards being sent overseas will go to a unit where school principal Gretchen Sukdolak’s husband is serving right now.

“He is a 32-year veteran of the service. He is also an educator with the Lockport City School District, and when he gets cards from home, with the guys in the 914th and women when they get things from the community, they love it; but I’ll tell you something else, they never ask. And, our veteran community at large, they are humble. All they want is to say ‘thank you,'” she said.

The rest of the Valentine cards will be brought to veterans at the Leonard Post on Walden Avenue.

Sukdolak says this is just one of several projects students are working on for veterans.
