Skate park gets closer to reality

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- A skate park to honor Alix Rice is one step closer to reality, thanks to a fundraiser at the Main Transit Fire Hall. Many prizes were up for auction, including one period in the announcing booth with Sabres play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret.

Alix’s mother says the event did very well last year and should push the family past a critical point to help them finalize plans for the park.

Tammy Schueler said, “We’ve been working hand in hand with the Town of Amherst feverishly for over a year, and I’m hoping within the next couple of weeks to be able to give the location announcement, and that’s going to be the tipping point of everything.”

Loved ones say they need $250,000 to build the skate park. Rice was just 18 when she was hit and by a car and killed two years ago while riding her longboard. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
