Hostler, Downing take pressure off Hackett

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) – Second-year offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will have plenty of help this season, with senior offensive assistant Jim Hostler and quarterbacks coach Todd Downing joining the staff.

The Bills introduced Hostler and Downing Tuesday, along with defensive line coach Pepper Johnson, linebackers coach Fred Pagac, and wide receivers coach Rob Moore.

Hostler, whose role has yet to be clearly defined, says much of his job will be to make life easier on Hackett.

“Whatever makes him comfortable,” said Hostler. “We’re still trying to go through the process to see how I fit, where I fit, the dynamics of the room, where to push, where to pull. Those things are all going to be a process as we go.”

Hackett also served as QB coach last year, a role that Downing now takes over. He has some familiarity with EJ Manuel, having worked with him at the Senior Bowl last year.

“He’d ask me to meet earlier in the morning than meetings started, and stay later,” said Downing. “I think that’s what separates him from other quarterbacks. He’s willing to put in the time. He wants as much

HE WAS THE GUY THAT, HE’D ASK ME TO MEET EARLIER IN THE MORNING THAN MEETINGS STARTED, AND STAY LATER. I THINK THAT’S WHAT SEPARATES HIM FROM OTHER QUARTERBACKS. HE’S WILLING TO PUT IN THE TIME.
