Event to offer free tax prep assistance

Tax prep assistance filing

Erie County residents who need help claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits can get some help later this month. Clerk Chris Jacobs will hold a free tax prep event on Wednesday, February 26th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Erie County Auto Bureau, at 3095 Sheridan Drive.

Taxpayers are eligible for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and may also qualify for the EITC if: the maximum household income is $52,000, and applicants qualify to use 1040 EZ, 1040A or 1040 forms.

Persons who wish to take advantage of this program must make an appointment and must bring a picture ID, W-2 forms and other income records, and records or receipts for expenses such as child care and/or education. Filers must also provide social security cards or ITIN letters for all family members and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible. A complete list of the documents and information required can be found at http://www.erie.gov/clerk/taxprep.

In order to provide prompt assistance, appointments are required. Taxpayers who wish to schedule an appointment or have further questions are asked to call 2-1-1 or 1-888-696-9211.
