Man pleads guilty to high speed chase, crash

A man who led Buffalo Police on a high speed chase reaching speeds over 100 MPH before crashing pleaded guilty on Wednesday.

Last April, Andre Smith allegedly menaced a woman with a handgun. Officers responded and attempted to pull the 28-year-old over, but he instead hit the gas, leading police a high speed pursuit that ended when Smith crashed into a garden while driving off the road between two houses on Glenwood Avenue.

Smith grabbed his gun and fled on foot but was quickly tackled. The Erie County District Attorney says Smith told police, “I am a great driver and I would have gotten away if I hadn’t run out of gas.”

He will be sentenced in March for second degree criminal possession of a weapon and faces a minimum of three-and-a-half years in prison and a maximum sentence of 15 years behind bars. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
