Proud WNYers make trip to Sochi

The Jog for the Jake has become a popular Father's Day race through Delaware Park on Father's Day.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – During the games in Sochi, News 4 has been keeping up some western New Yorkers who made the trip to Russia.

Tom O’Connor and Steven Arlington say they’re spreading the Buffalo love in Sochi, Russia. They proudly wave a scarf that says ‘Buffalo, NY’ on it, at every event. Tom and Steven say they’ve even met people at the games who’ve either lived here at one point who have family in the area.

Tom and Steven say a highlight of their trip so far was watching American snowboarder Shaun White compete. They also got to cheer on gold medalist Jamie Anderson who won gold on the women’s slope-style.

On Twitter, Tom has been sharing beautiful pictures of the Olympic flame and sunsets. When they watched the USA/Canada Women’s hockey game the other night, they even got some help from USA men’s hockey players, like Phil Kessell, as they cheered on the women’s team.

It doesn’t happen everyday, hockey fans and hockey players sitting basically side by side cheering on the same team. Tom and Steve have tickets to some of the men’s USA hockey games, but they haven’t bumped into Ryan Miller yet. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
