Teen who crashed stolen car allegedly impaired by drugs, alcohol

Deputies say a 19-year-old driving a stolen car was impaired by drugs and alcohol when he crashed into the back of a garbage truck stopped at a red light.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dakota Hewitt of Lockport following an accident at Campbell Boulevard and Lockport Road in Pendleton around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. Deputies say a garbage truck was stopped at a red light when it was rear-ended by Hewitt, who was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle.

Hewitt was arrested and charged with DWAI by drugs and alcohol, following too closely, operating without a license, and fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property. His passenger, 42-year-old Donathan Alston of Lockport, was also charged with fourth degree criminal possession of a stolen property.

Neither man was injured in the crash, nor was the driver of the garbage truck.

Hewitt was taken to the Niagara County Jail on $750 bail, and Alston was taken there on $100 bail.

Deputies say several items in the vehicle may have been stolen. Lockport Police are investigating.
