Water being added to ice rinks for tournament

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Crews are making progress at the two rinks being built for this year’s Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament.

Refrigeration lines for the rinks have been installed at the Buffalo Riverworks site, and crews are beginning to add water for the ice. The tournament kicks off February 21 with 120 teams and 800 players taking part.

After the tournament, the new rinks are not going anywhere.

Riverworks partner Doug Swift said, “The one rink behind us, when it’s not part of the Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament, it’s going to be a regulation amateur hockey facility. And the second rink we’re going to be converting to curling. So we’re going to have five lanes of curling.”

The fun begins at 8 a.m. on February 21.
