No seat belt leads to drug charges

A Rochester man who was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over in Cattaraugus County on Thursday was arrested on drug charges.

Troopers stopped a female driver on Rt. 219 in Ashford when they say they saw 27-year-old Luis Ortiz not wearing his seat belt. Police say they could smell marijuana in the vehicle, and when they asked Ortiz to step outside to speak with them, they saw a marijuana cigarette in the passenger side door handle.

Authorities say Ortiz had more marijuana on him, as well as a marijuana grinder, and a zip lock bag containing a small amount of cocaine. He was taken into custody on charges of fifth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Ortiz posted $750 bail and is due back in court next month. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
