OLEAN, N.Y. (AP) — A western New York police officer is credited with saving a woman from her burning home.

The Olean Times Herald reports Thursday that Olean Patrolman Brian Cross was out on patrol early Wednesday morning when he smelled smoke.

Authorities say he was able to find the source — a burning house — and called it in. The 15-year police veteran then went inside and helped the 83-year-old homeowner to safety.

No one was hurt.

The initial investigation points to an electrical problem as the cause. The 119-year-old house was a total loss. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
