BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – An employee was stabbed Friday night at Gates Circle Wine and Liquor on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo during an apparent shoplifting attempt.

Police say that Darnell Wells, 31, attempted to steal items from the store.  When he was confronted by employees, police say that Wells stabbed one of them in the abdomen.

During the altercation, police say that Wells’ girlfriend, Shawna Boyd, 34, punched and yelled obscenities at employees.

Wells was taken into custody around 9 p.m. near Delaware Avenue at Delavan. Around 45 minutes later, his girlfriend was also arrested.

The 28 year-old employee was taken to ECMC with apparent non-life threatening injuries and is listed in fair condition at ECMC.

Wells was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, petite larceny and other charges. Boyd was charged with disorderly conduct.
