BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A passerby alerted authorities of a fire in Buffalo Monday night.

Someone knocked on the door of Engine 22 on Broadway telling fire crews that a building was on fire blocks away. The blaze was on Peck Street about a quarter mile from the station.

Fire crews managed to stay safe despite having problems with equipment at the scene.

Buffalo Fire Lt. Stephen Hartman said, “The first hydrant that we hit was frozen; we didn’t get any water. So it took us a little while to get some water on the fire. But like I said, no exposure problems. We weren’t going to go in. The chief made a great call and we were going defensive right from the get go.”

Hartman adds that during this type of weather, water pressure is usually an issue. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
