Minor flooding along Cattaraugus Creek

SUNSET BAY, N.Y. (WIVB) – Residents in Sunset Bay were advised to leave their homes by emergency officials as flood waters began to rise Friday night.

The Red Cross set up a shelter for displaced residents at the Silver Creek Assembly of God church on Rt. 20 in Silver Creek. Though residents were advised to leave their homes if necessary, it was not a mandate and no homes were evacuated.

Sunset Bay Fire First Assistant Fire Chief Mark Dietzen said, “Due to a little bit of ice jam blockage on Cattaraugus Creek, we’ve had water back up both into the state boat launch and some low-lying water that is outside the streets.”

He says the fire company warned the residents through the fire alarm and reverse 911 calls to make them aware of the minor flooding situation.

“We’re basically monitoring the creek as best we can,” Dietzen said. “We’re hoping for the best.”
