Lancaster man wins $10 million lotto jackpot

DEPEW, N.Y. (WIVB) – After winning on seven scratch off NYS lottery tickets in a row, Jerry Kajfasz decided to tempt fate and get an eighth ticket. That decision would end up being worth $10 million.

In January, the 53-year-old Lancaster man stopped at Depew One Stop on Broadway Street in Depew to buy an assortment of scratch-off tickets. He says he asked the clerk for seven tickets, and the clerk mistakenly handed him an eight ticket from the “Win For Life Spectacular” game. Kajfasz explained the error, returned the ticket and went out to his truck to try his luck.

All seven of the tickets were winners. Kajfasz, feeling luck was in the air, returned to the store and asked the clerk for the “Win For Life Spectacular” ticket he had initially rejected. He scratched the ticket to reveal he won big – $10,000,000 over the course of his life.

“I’ll believe it when the money is actually in my bank account. As of right now, it’s all kind of unbelievable. It all seems a little staged, a weird dream I never woke up from,” said Frank, Kajfasz’s son.

Kajfasz will receive a portion of the prize every year for the next 20 years. He opted to share the big win with his children, who will also receive a check each year.

The NYS Lottery says Kajfasz is Erie County’s first jackpot winner of 2014, and the eleventh player statewide to win a prize of $1 million or more.

After his big win, Kajfasz retired from the printing job he has held for the last 27 years.
