Police: woman grabs gun, bullet grazes another woman’s leg

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) – A woman was shot Tuesday night at a home in Niagara Falls as officers were taking a suspect wanted on felony assault warrants into custody.

Niagara Falls Police officers and Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies were investigating a narcotics sales in the area of 27th and Niagara Street around 8:30 p.m. when they spotted a wanted man. Officers say when they attempted to take the suspect into custody, he ran inside a home on Orleans Avenue.

Officers called for the man to exit the home, and he complied. But police say as they were taking him into a custody, a woman charged detectives and tried to grab one of their handguns. Police say the weapon discharged and the bullet grazed the leg of a second woman who was inside the home.

The injured woman was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries. Police say an infant inside the home during the incident was uninjured.

There are no details on whether any charges have been filed. The Niagara Falls Police Department is still investigating what happened.
