Agencies practice ice rescue on Lake Erie

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – First responders practiced their skills Wednesday night to be sure they could perform an ice rescue on Lake Erie.

Fire departments, police departments, Air One and underwater rescue teams took part in this drill in Buffalo’s outer harbor. They had to use the techniques they would need if an aircraft ever went down in the harbor.

U.S. Coast Guard BM1 Josh Fennell said, “When we practice these drills together, we can practice our communications, for going out, working together, practice our techniques, and our equipment so we know when we’re working with each other for some kind of scenario like this that could happen.”

This is just one of several drills these agencies take part in each year. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
