Nighttime ice rescue drill set for Buffalo harbor

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard and several local agencies will be conducting an ice rescue exercise on Buffalo’s Lake Erie waterfront.

Coast Guard officials say crew members based in Buffalo will be joined Wednesday night in the Outer Harbor by local agencies that are part of the Advanced Local Emergency Rescue Team, known as ALERT.

ALERT members include local fire departments and police departments, Mercy Flight, underwater rescue teams, and water rescue units from eastern Lake Erie.

Wednesday’s drill scenario will involve ice-rescue tactics and techniques that would be used in the event of a downed aircraft in Buffalo’s Outer Harbor. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
