Program brings musical theater to students

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A new program at Shea’s Performing Arts Center will help build on Buffalo’s love of theater by cultivating more young fans.

The program is being called ‘Shea’s Broadway Junior Celebration’ and organizers are hoping to bring the success they’ve seen in Washington, DC and New York to Buffalo. Students and teachers from 20 elementary schools will have the chance to learn all aspects of musical theater from some of Broadway’s best and then perform at the 710 Main Theater.

The goal is to enhance schools with musical theater programs, develop programs at underserved schools and then encourage them all to work together.

Timothy McDonald of iTheatrics said, “Musicals are the superfood of the arts when it comes to arts education because in a musical you bring all of the arts together in a nice, yummy bite-sized package.”

The program won’t cost the schools anything. It is being funded this year by Shea’s and an anonymous donor and they are working on getting corporate sponsors for future years.
