BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Alex Currie is already an award winning photographer at the age of 16. The Amherst Central High School junior’s work is featured in national publications. Even Vogue magazine has recognized some of his photographs.
“I’d like to pursue film, any sort of cinematography, directing, editing, whatever the sorts, so I’m looking at film schools right now for college,” said Alex.
Alex’s love for photography started when he was 11. Now, he’s right in the middle of a 365 project, where he takes a photo every day for 365 days. Alex tries to make his a conceptual portrait every day, but doesn’t always have access to models. So oftentimes, his family and friends end up as the subjects of his work. He, too, poses for many of his own photographs.
“That’s become an interesting challenge to try and play both roles in the same thing,” said Currie.
Alex was recently featured as ‘Photographer of the Week” by online publication ‘Photofocus’.
Looking at his photos, it’s clear that Alex is very talented. But his real passion is video.
He and a few of his friends got together last year to put together a four-minute video called “Worn,” about four students struggling. They wrote it together, filmed it together, and acted in it together. Then, they entered it into a national Fine Arts contest in the short film category, and won first place.
“The video affected a lot of people. We actually had people from Amherst, this school, coming up to us and telling us they really connected with the video and it really did help them and that was really great. It was a really great thing, better than the award and all that, it was nice to be able to impact somebody’s life like that and it was really nice for us to all share that”.

Whether Alex is asking his parents to wrap him in newspaper ads, or has his friends pose behind shadowing window frames, he says he wants to make people feel something.
“I like to make things that impact people in one way or another. I think the best types of photos and videos are ones that make you feel emotions, ones that can evoke something in you, whether that’s a good or a bad feeling. I’ll hear a lot that some of my photos are creepy and they make you feel weird, but I think that’s kind of the purpose of them, even to make you uncomfortable, just to make you think about something”.
