Town to re-name park in fallen hero’s name

Wilson

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Town of Amherst is honoring a local hero who lost his life in Afghanistan.

The former Margaret Louise Park on Hopkins Road will be renamed to honor Staff Sergeant William Wilson III.

The Getzville native was shot and killed by a U.S. trained security officer in Afghanistan in 2012. He was just 27 years old.

Last year the 990 was officially named ‘Staff Sgt. William R. Wilson III Memorial Highway’ in his memory.

Wilson’s parents tell News 4 they were surprised and very happy with this latest honor. Their son played in the small park when he was growing up.

The park will be dedicated this summer.
