Controversial dept. superintendent speaks to media

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Interim Deputy Superintendent of Buffalo Schools, Dr. Mary Guinn, addressed the media Tuesday. Guinn has been at the center of controversy in the district, and was just approved to be here for three more months.

Dr. Mary Guinn had her contract terminated as the high-paid consultant to Buffalo Public Schools last October, but now by a 5-3 vote by the school board, she has a three-month contract as interim deputy superintendent.

“I believe that education is a right and right for every single individual who shows up at the school house door and I believe we have an obligation when we accept a paycheck to ensure high quality instruction,” Guinn said.

She added that she is happy to be back with the district. Guinn says she will overcome critics by simply doing the job.

The district will continue looking for a permanent deputy superintendent. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
