TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Flames broke out around 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Swiderski Motorcar on Fletcher Street in the City of Tonawanda.
Crews tell News 4 the blaze started in a car parked near the front of the building, which then spread to the structure. Two companies were called for mutual aid as firefighters struggled with frozen hydrants.
Tonawanda City Fire Chief Charles Stuart said, “The building’s filled with tires and petroleum products and at the same time the building’s unstable so it’s difficult for the guys to safely get close enough to apply the water like they need to. So at this point we’re just going to take a defensive stance.”
The fire caused extensive damage. Several cars inside the building burned.
Employees were working at the time the flames broke out, but everyone escaped safely.
