BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Whether you work out of your home, or in an office, chances are you’ve probably wished you could take a nap during your work day. One professor at Buffalo State has a place in his building designed specifically for a quick sleep, his new nap pod.
It looks like something from Star Wars, but this pod-like device sits in an office at Buffalo State College.
Senior Lecturer for Creative Studies Professor Michael Fox said, “One of the prizes was this pod that is used for napping so that a person can become more productive and so on.”
Fox believes in the power of the nap. He entered a contest through Dove Men Plus Care, and he won. This nap pod was the prize.
Fox said, “I saw the need to do some research around the relationship between creative production and sleep or napping.”
Once you get in the pod, you push the button to start your 20 minute or so nap. Then, soothing music begins and you shut the pod door. Once your timer is up, the pod slowly wakes you up.
Fox doesn’t just plan to use the pod himself, he is working to design a first-of-its kind research project measuring how a nap can help your creativity.
The research indicates that getting your creativity back, that stuff we packed away when we were kids, there may be tactical and practical things that we can do, and one of them is probably a daily nap of 20 to in my educated guess tells me 24 minutes.
There is already plenty of research that shows napping can improve productivity, but creativity is another matter.
Fox said, “My hypothesis is that this will be an appropriate, if not absolutely useful tool for increasing an organization’s creative output.”
Fox believes offices all over the country will one day offer areas like this, where sleeping on the job is perfectly acceptable.
