Attica raid produces dozens of rare birds, turtles

A Wyoming County man is facing nearly 200 violations for allegedly possessing an extensive collection of rare animals as well as protected birds that had gone through taxidermy.

John P. Volpe, 62, from Attica was arrested Thursday fry officers from the State Department of Conservation.

Volpe ‘s home was raided and officers found 100 live turtles, a live screech owl, a live red-tailed hawk and mounts of more than a dozen protected birds of prey.  He was charged with 190 violations.  It’s illegal in New York to possess certain types of live or dead wildlife without a permit or license.

The Batavia Daily News reports that this was not Volpe’s first brush with the law, in 2005 he was found to be in possession of two live birds of prey. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
