SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WIVB) – After a dominant senior season, Canisius point guard Billy Baron is the MAAC Player of the Year.

The league handed out the award Friday night in Springfield, Massachusetts – the site of this weekend’s MAAC tournament.

Baron is the only player in the nation to average more than 20 points, five assists, and five rebounds a game this season. He is just the third Canisius player to win the honor, joining Craig Wise (1995) and Darrell Barley (1996).

“I honestly believe this award goes to my teammates as much as it goes to me,” Baron said in a Canisius press release. “To win this award, you have to win games. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are now. This is a really good league. There are a lot of guys that can play and every night is a battle. I’m proud to be a part of helping turn the Canisius men’s basketball program around.”

The Griffs have the #4 seed in this weekend’s tournament. They will take on Siena Saturday at 2:30pm, a team Canisius has already beaten twice this season.
