Group says schools in NY are in fiscal peril

ELLICOTTVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) – The group Statewide School Financial Consortium says that New York schools are in fiscal peril.

Organizers claim $236 million in promised state aid to education has been withheld in WNY. Several school boards and parent groups heard about New York school funding at a meeting in Ellicottville on Monday.

The group blames a program called the “Gap Elimination Adjustment.”

Dr. Rick Timbs explained, “The funding has got to change because their children are just as important as anyone else’s in the state. Legislators and the governor have got to see the light and make sure that these schools are not only adequately funded, sufficiently funded, and equitably funded.”

Consortium officials say that is less this school year than it was five years ago.
