Police say driver tried to flee on foot after getting truck stuck

JAVA, N.Y. (WIVB) – A driver who tried to flee in his truck and then on foot after he went off the road was arrested Saturday on drunk driving charges.

Troopers attempted to stop the driver of a 2004 Chevy pickup truck on Perry Road in the Town of Java for driving erratically. But State Police say the driver hit the gas and attempted to flee.

When the driver came to a curve in the road, police say he lost control and went into a field, and his truck got stuck. He then allegedly attempted to flee on foot.

Troopers quickly took 28-year-old Shawn Eley of Varysburg into custody and charged him with DWI. Officers report a breath test revealed Eley had a BAC of .22 percent, which is almost three times the legal limit.

He is being charged with aggravated DWI, moving from lane unsafely, and failure to keep right.
