Grand Island woman killed in PA crash

ELDRED, PA. (WIVB) – A 26-year-old Grand Island woman was killed and her two passengers were critically injured in a crash Thursday morning in Eldred, PA.

The Bradford Era reports the accident between a car and tractor trailer closed Rt. 446 between Portville, NY and the PA town for 10 hours. Lindsay Schmit died at the scene. Her passengers, a child between the ages of 3 and 4 and 23-year-old Christopher Johnson, were taken to Olean General Hospital before being flown to a hospital in Buffalo. They remain in critical condition.

State Police in Pennsylvania say none of them were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a 53-year-old Olean man, was not injured in the crash. The tractor trailer reportedly belongs to Olean Wholesale Grocery Co-op.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, but say Schmit’s vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and was struck. Icy roads may have been a factor.
