BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The region’s Catholic Bishop called St. Patrick a “missionary to a nation of unbelievers” Sunday.

Before a St. Patrick’s Day morning mass at St. Joseph Cathedral on Main Street, Most Rev. Richard Malone answered questions about the anniversary of Pope Francis’ ascension to the papacy, then talked about the saint being celebrated in two parades and other events this weekend.

“He was an evangelizer, who suffered much in the process of fulfilling his mission.  I think Saint Patrick was probably a very serious guy.  I don’t know that he would easily relate to a lot of the ways we celebrate his feast.  This is a holy day, of course, in Ireland.  Tomorrow is, tomorrow is a holy day,” Malone said.
